{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The lion entered British heraldry in the 12th century, largely due to the influence of the Plantagenet rulers and the broader adoption of heraldic imagery throughout Europe during the Crusades. In 2025, The Royal Mint introduces a new bullion coin series celebrating this historic emblem. Provident Metals now has the 2025 British The British Lion 1/4 oz Gold Coins available for purchase.
Highlights:
Each of these 2025 British The British Lion 1/4 oz Gold Coins is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. They are packaged in individual plastic flips or in acrylic tubes that hold 25 coins. The reverse side includes a unique security featurea visual animation of the Union Flag built into the background design.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2025 British The British Lion Gold Coin is the official portrait of King Charles III. This design, introduced by Martin Jennings in 2022, shows the monarch in a left-profile pose without a crown and is the first image of Charles III used on UK currency. The inscriptions read CHARLES III, D G REX F D, and 25 POUNDS.
Reverse
The reverse design of the 2025 The British Lion 1/4 oz Gold Coin displays a powerful British lion. David Lawrence created this artwork to depict the lion seated in a left-profile view, roaring, with one raised paw resting on a circular shield. Behind the lion, the textured background includes a security detail showcasing the Union Flag. Inscriptions here read LEO BRITANNICVS, 1/4 OZ 999.9, 2025, and FINE GOLD.
History
The lion continues to hold an important role in British symbolism. It features prominently in the Royal Arms, especially in the first and fourth quarters where three lions are shown. Lions are also paired with the unicorn of Scotland as royal supporters and are found throughout the emblems of various British institutions, including universities and military units.
