Obverse

The obverse of the 2025 Black Proof Republic of Ghana James the son of Zebedee Silver Coin displays a left-facing image of King Charles III. This portrait, which does not feature a crown, was designed by artist Jody Clark, who also created the final official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Reverse

On the reverse side of this 2025 Black Proof James the son of Zebedee 1 oz Silver Coin, you will see an image of James shortly before his death. While Judas died first, James was the first apostle to be executed because of his beliefs. His death was carried out by sword at the order of King Herod, who was targeting Christian leaders at the time. Inscriptions include JAMES THE SON OF ZEBEDEE.

History

James, one of Jesus earliest followers, is believed to be the first apostle to suffer martyrdom. According to the Acts of the Apostles, he was put to death by King Herod Agrippa I around 44 CE. His death is considered the start of official efforts to suppress the early Christian movement. Over time, stories surrounding his life grew, especially in Spain, where he is celebrated as a patron saint.
