The reverse of the 2024 Proof Bounty 1 oz Silver Coin showcases the HMS Bounty. This small, three-masted ship weighed around 215 tons, was 90 feet 10 inches long, with a beam of 24 feet 4 inches and a draft of 11 feet 4 inches. Inscriptions on this side read HMS BOUNTY and .999 AG 1 OZ.
History
On its maiden voyage, Lieutenant William Bligh initially tried to reach Tahiti by sailing around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. However, after a month of battling severe storms and contrary winds, he was forced to abandon this route. Unable to round Cape Horn, Bligh changed course and headed east instead. The Bounty sailed across the Atlantic, around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, and then across the Indian Ocean to reach Tahiti.
