The HMS Bounty set sail on its first voyage in 1787. The famous mutiny took place on April 28, 1789, as the Bounty was sailing from Tahiti to the West Indies, near the island of Tofua in the Friendly Islands, now known as Tonga. Fletcher Christian, the Master’s Mate and once-favored crewmember of Captain Bligh, led the mutiny.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2024 Bounty 1/4 oz Silver Coins features King Charles III. This is the first-generation portrait of Charles III on Pitcairn Islands coinage. The left-profile relief, created by Glyn Davies, depicts the king without a crown. Inscriptions read CHARLES III, PITCAIRN ISLANDS, ONE DOLLAR, and 2024.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 2024 Pitcairn Islands Bounty Silver Coin showcases the HMS Bounty. During its maiden voyage, the Bounty had a crew of 42 men. Among them, 22 joined Fletcher Christian in the mutiny, 18 remained loyal to Lieutenant Bligh, and two stayed neutral. Inscriptions include HMS BOUNTY and .999 AG 1/4 OZ.

History

Bligh and 18 loyal crew members were set adrift in the Bounty’s 23-foot open launch. In a remarkable feat of seamanship, Bligh navigated the overcrowded boat 3,618 nautical miles to Timor in 47 days with only minimal losses. After the mutiny, Christian and his followers first tried to settle on the island of Tubuai. When this failed, they returned to Tahiti, where 16 mutineers decided to remain.
