Each 2024 New Zealand $5 Niue Hawksbill Turtle 2 oz Silver Coin is carefully packaged in a protective plastic flip. Since its debut in 2010, this coin series has maintained a consistent design on the reverse, with the introduction of King Charles III on the obverse in 2024.

Obverse

King Charles III is showcased on the obverse of the 2024 Niue Hawksbill Turtle Silver Coins, portrayed in a left-profile relief by Jody Clark, without a crown. Inscriptions on this side read KING CHARLES III, NIUE, FIVE DOLLARS, and 2024.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2024 $5 Niue Hawksbill Turtle 2 oz Silver Coin, you’ll find the striking hawksbill turtle. The hawksbill turtle has a specialized diet, mainly consisting of sponges, jellyfish, and other invertebrates associated with coral reefs. Their narrow pointed beak allows them to reach into crevices and holes to extract their prey. Inscriptions here include TURTLE and FINE SILVER 999 2 OZ.

History

The design of the New Hawksbill has evolved over its history, with some changes being minor. The reverse consistently features the hawksbill turtle at its center. While the modern Niue Hawksbill showcases the word “TURTLE” on this side, the series was previously known as the Fiji Taku from 2010-2013, displaying the word “TAKU” on the reverse.

On the obverse, the coin has featured three distinct designs. From 2010-2012, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was depicted, followed by the Fijian coat of arms in the 2013 Fiji Taku release. From 2014-2023, Her Majesty’s effigy returned, and in 2024, King Charles III made his debut.
