Obverse

The obverse of the 2024 Mexican Libertad Silver Coin displays the national coat of arms of Mexico, a symbol that dates back to the Codex Mendoza of 1524. It depicts a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, holding a serpent in its beak and talon. Surrounding this image are 10 historic versions of the emblem, along with a wreath of oak and laurel. Inscriptions here read ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2024 Libertad 1 oz Silver Coin presents the inspiring figure of Winged Victory, a symbol based on the ancient goddess Victoria. She is shown standing atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column, holding a laurel wreath in her right hand and broken chains in her left. The mountains Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl are visible in the background. The inscriptions on this side include 1 ONZA, PLATA PURA, 2024 LEY .999, and the mint mark.

History

As the most popular coin in the Mexican Libertad series, the 1 oz Silver Libertad has a storied history. During the first decade of its release, eight of the initial nine years saw mintages surpassing 1 million coins, with the 1985 coin setting an early high at 2.017 million coins. The peak mintage for the 1 oz Silver Libertad came in 1992 with 2.458 million coins produced.
