Alderney, a Channel Island off the coast of Normandy, France, has issued the commemorative 2024 Alderney D-Day 80th Anniversary 1 oz Silver Coin in honor of D-Day’s 80th anniversary.
Highlights:
Alderney’s location in the English Channel, just off the coast of Normandy, made it strategically important for both the Allied and Axis powers. For the Germans, it served as a base for patrols, as well as a potential launching point for attacks on Allied shipping lanes. For the Allies, recapturing the Channel Islands was seen as a potential stepping stone for an invasion of mainland Europe.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2024 D-Day 80th Anniversary 1 oz Silver Coin features a captivating portrait of King Charles III, crafted by renowned artist Jody Clark, symbolizing steadfast leadership during tumultuous times. Notably, the design lacks a crown. Inscriptions include ALDERNEY, DEI GRA REX, CHARLES III, and 2024.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 2024 Alderney D-Day 80th Anniversary Silver Coin captures the historic moment of Allied troops storming the beaches of Normandy, a pivotal event that marked the beginning of the end of Nazi oppression in Europe. Inscriptions here include D-DAY, 1944-2024, 80 YEARS, 1, and 1 OZ .999 SILVER.
History
The scars of war go well beyond the hardships suffered by the island’s residents. All 1,500 residents of Alderney were relocated to mainland Britain prior to the German invasion of the island, but this was just the start of several horrors of World War II that would leave a lasting impression on the island and its landscape. German forces constructed four labor camps (Lager Sylt, Lager Norderney, Lager Helgoland, and Lager Borkum) on Alderney. These camps housed forced laborers, including political prisoners, Jews, and POWs, who were subjected to harsh conditions and forced to build fortifications.
