Obverse

On the obverse of 2023 Hibernia 1 oz Silver Coins youll see the Public Seal of Niue. This official seal confirms the coins legal tender status in Niue, an island country of the South Pacific. The seal is accompanied by inscriptions reading 2 DOLLARS, NIUE, 2023.

Reverse

The reverse of 2023 Niue 1 oz Silver Coins features Hibernia in full profile. As she stands straight with her head turned to the left, Hibernia wields both a spear and a classical Irish harp. In the tradition of Greek and Roman figures, Hibernia is also shown wearing robes and a Corinthian helmet. Along the border of the field there are inscriptions that read HIBERNIA, 1 OZ .9999 FINE SILVER.

History

Hibernia can be seen as Irelands version of allegorical figures such as Britannia and Lady Liberty. Visually what sets her apart from these other figures is that she wields a harp, which is a distinctly Irish image. A central heraldic symbol of Ireland, the harp has represented Irish sovereignty since roughly the 13th century. As for the name Hibernia, it is simply the Latin word for Ireland originally used by the Roman historian Tacitus.
