Obverse
On the obverse of 2023 Rwandan Great Eastern Nautical Ounce Silver Coins, witness the national coat of arms of Rwanda. This design features a traditional basket in front of a cogwheel, flanked by branches of coffee and sorghum. Overhead, a stylized sun shines, with traditional warrior’s shields on either side. Inscriptions here include BANKI NKURU Y’U RWANDA, AMAFARANGA MIRONGO ITANU, REPUBLIKA Y’U RWANDA, UBUMWE-UMURIMO-GUKUNDA IGIHUGU, and the 50 face value.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2023 Great Eastern Nautical Ounce 1 oz Silver Coin presents a detailed depiction of The Great Eastern. Designed by Brunel and constructed by John Scott Russell & Company, this historic ship took nearly four years to complete. Construction began in May 1854 and concluded in January 1858. Inscriptions on this side include NAUTICAL OUNCE, 2023, 1 OZ FINE SILVER 999, and GREAT EASTERN.
History
Notable features of the Great Eastern included its massive size for the time, advanced technology, and innovative design. It was the largest ship in the world at the time of its launch. The ship had both paddle wheels and a screw propeller for propulsion, providing flexibility in various sea conditions.
