With the release of the new Lucky Angel Series, the East India Company and the Issuing Authority of St. Helena continue a partnership that has its roots in the 17th century. The East India Company and the Issuing Authority of St. Helena revived a partnership in 2011 that dates back to the 17th century. During the 17th century, the East India Company was given a charter by Oliver Cromwell to establish a base on St. Helena and was charged with governing the island. It would eventually issue the first Pound denominations specifically for the island.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 2023 Proof Lucky Angel 1 oz Silver Coin, you will find a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In this 2015 design from Jody Clark, Her Majesty is shown in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, D.G. REG F.D., ST. HELENA, 2023, and 1 POUND.

Reverse

The reverse field of the 2023 Proof St Helena Lucky Angel Silver Coin comes with a depiction of the angel. Here, the angel is shown in front-facing relief on the top of a globe. This field has the 24-karat gold layering that covers her robes, the wreath in her hand, her wings, and the flanking branches. The remainder of the field, including the angels body, features pure silver. Inscriptions read ANGEL and the EIC mint mark of the East India Company.

History

Augustine Dupre created the original Angel coin in 1792 at the request of King Louis XVI. Dupre would escape the guillotine during the French Revolution only by bribing his guards with an angel coin. The aura of luck surrounding the coins only grew from there, with Napoleon Bonaparte reportedly carrying one with him at all times. Rumor has it that he lost his angel coin the day before the Battle of Waterloo.
