Obverse

Martin Jennings’ design shows King Charles III in left-profile relief on the obverse side of the 2023 Proof British Merlin Gold Coin. This marks the first time that the monarch has appeared on these coins after the passing of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions read CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., 25 POUNDS, and 2023.

Reverse

Merlin, the famous Welsh wizard, appears on the reverse side of the 2023 Proof Merlin 1/4 oz Gold Coins. His character has been referred to as both a sorcerer and a wizard in historical texts, and his origins can be traced back to Welsh culture. The inscriptions on this side include MERLIN, MYTHS AND LEGENDS, and 2023.

History

Merlin’s character and legends were later adapted and expanded upon in medieval Arthurian literature, where he became known as a trusted advisor to King Arthur. In these stories, Merlin is often depicted as a wise and powerful wizard who helps Arthur on his quest to become a great king.
