Also on the obverse is a heraldic eagle design and leaves from the beloved linden tree. Inscriptions read 5 DOLLARS 2023.
Reverse
On the reverse of 2023 Niue Czech Lion Multigram 12.5 Gram Gold Coins, a lion is depicted in closeup as it guards the crown of Saint Wenceslas. Inscriptions are also shown that read CESKA REPUBLIKA, 1/2 GRAM AU 999.9.
History
One account of how the lion became the symbol of the Czech Republic can be found in the tale of Bruncvk. In this telling, a prince travels to Africa and assists a lion in a fight against a dangerous monster. But the more plausible explanation is presented by the old chroniclers. According to their writings, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa presented Prince Vladislaus II with a new crest animal and crown in the 12th century. The lion was chosen for its associations with power and sovereignty and has appeared in the nations heraldry ever since.
