First introduced in 1878 and last circulated in 1921, the Morgan Silver Dollar has made a triumphant return as part of the US Mint’s commemorative bullion collection of modern Morgan and Peace Dollars.
Highlights:
The Morgan Dollar holds a prominent place in American numismatic history and remains a highly sought-after collector’s item. Minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, this remarkable coin takes its name from George T. Morgan, the skilled English-born engraver working at the United States Mint.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features a captivating portrayal of Lady Liberty. This classic bust of Liberty, facing left, adorns a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and laurel wreath in her hair, evoking a sense of timeless beauty. Inscriptions read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 2023.
Reverse
Flip the 2023 Morgan Dollar Coin to admire the reverse, showcasing the majestic heraldic eagle. This breathtaking depiction portrays the bald eagle in all its glory, with wings outstretched, clutching both the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
In 1904, production of the Morgan Silver Dollar ceased due to a surplus of silver in the Treasury and the passage of the Gold Standard Act, which limited the backing of paper currency to gold only. However, in 1918, due to the Pittman Act, which called for the melting and re-coining of silver dollars, a small number of Morgans were minted in 1921 to satisfy the demand for silver dollars.
