This coin is part of a 2023 series highlighting the humpback whale, with additional releases that include 1/4 oz gold coins from the same year. A P mint mark appears on the reverse, identifying the Perth Mint as the official producer.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 Australian Humpback Whale Silver Coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This likeness was created in 2015 and became the sixth-generation portrait used on Australian coinage from 2018 until 2023. The design shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 1952-2022, AUSTRALIA, and 2 DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2023 Humpback Whale 2 oz Silver Coin depicts a humpback whale breaching above ocean waters. This design reflects the whales well-known behavior and highlights its role as one of the most widely traveled mammals on Earth. Humpbacks migrate between feeding grounds rich in nutrients and warmer breeding regions each year. Inscriptions read HUMPBACK WHALE, 2023, 2 OZ 9999 SILVER, and the P mint mark.
History
Humpback whales are known for their long seasonal migrations and complex social interactions. They can travel up to 16,000 miles each year as they move between colder feeding waters and warmer breeding areas. Male humpbacks are especially known for their long songs, which are made up of repeating patterns that can last for many minutes and gradually change across whale populations.
