A worldwide best-seller, the Silver Eagle has been offered every year since 1986. Obverse
The obverse of 2023 American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins features the classic Adolph Weinman Walking Liberty design. In this rendering from 1916, Lady Liberty is walking towards the left of the field, her right arm outstretched as the morning sun rises. This inspiring image is accompanied by inscriptions reading LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 2023.
Reverse
On the reverse of the American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin a bald eagle is found soaring down through the air. In its talons is an oak branch, a deliberate design choice by artist Amy Damstra. After all, the majestic oak is the national tree of America. To witness its branch carried by the countrys national bird is a richly symbolic and poignant sight. The reverse also contains inscriptions that read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, 1 OZ FINE SILVER.
History
Annual bullion coin programs are popular with mints from across the globe. Some of the first coins to popularize the annual release bullion program were the Mexican Libertad and the Chinese Panda. In 1986, the beloved American Eagle arrived on the scene and inspired more countries to follow suit. Canada released its first silver Maple Leaf coin two years later. Other popular silver bullion coin releases that followed include the British Britannia, Austrian Philharmonic, and Australian Kangaroo.
