History
Pirate vessels like Captain Moodys often flew the Jolly Roger. The origins of the Jolly Roger flag are somewhat unclear, but it became popular during the Golden Age of Piracy in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It is believed that the flag’s purpose was to communicate the pirates’ hostile intentions, encouraging their victims to surrender without a fight.
