History
The notion of liberty has deep roots in the story of human civilization. The first known word to exhibit the idea of liberty was Ama-Gi, a Sumerian word that appeared on a tablet expressing unjust tax codes levied against the people of Girsu over four thousand years ago. Liberty is also strongly expressed through Libertas, a Roman Goddess who was featured on many ancient coins. In fact, Americas own female personification of liberty, seen most prominently in the Statue of Liberty, is derived directly from this classical Roman deity.
