Obverse
In the obverse design of the 2022 Elephant 1/10 oz Silver Coin, the Bavarian State Mint issues the national coat of arms of Somalia as the continuous design. This image consists of a crowned shield with a single star at the center set on a field of horizontal lines. The shield is supported by leopards on either side with a beaded border around the field. Inscriptions include SOMALI REPUBLIC, 2022, and 10 SHILLINGS.
Reverse
For the reverse design of 2022 Somalia Elephant Silver Coins, the mint features a new image in 2022 showcasing the family unit. In this design, two members of the herd are shown walking along the savanna. This adult-calf duo is walking along in left-profile relief with a small flock of birds overhead and trees on the horizon. The field includes inscriptions that read AFRICAN WILDLIFE, ELEPHANT, and 1/10 OZ AG 999.9.
History
In 1999, the Bavarian State Mint introduced the African Wildlife Elephant Silver Series as the Zambia Elephant. From 1999 to 2003, the coins were issued with 1 oz silver options. After the switch from Zambia to Somalia in 2004, 1 Kilo silver coins became popular in the series as well. In 2016, purity for the silver coins was boosted to .9999 fineness, and in 2017 three fractional-ounce and three additional weights between 1 oz and 1 Kilo were added. This included these 1/10 oz silver coins.
