{{/presale}}Famously rich in Mexican national symbolism, the beautiful Libertad coin series is one of the most famous annual releases from the Mexican Mint. With designs that celebrate key Mexican landmarks and heraldry, these bullion coins were first struck in 1982 and have been popular on the collectors’ market ever since in a range of different weights and precious metal compositions. Especially prized have been Libertad coins with proof and reverse proof finishes, produced in particularly limited mintages with collectible status specifically in mind, and 2022 saw the release of only the sixth five-ounce silver Libertads to feature the frosted backgrounds and polished foreground elements of a reverse proof finish. The 2022 Reverse Proof Mexican Libertad 5 oz Silver Coin is now on offer from Provident Metals.
Coin Highlights:
This 2022 Reverse Proof Mexican Libertad Silver Coin is one of the most prized releases in this remarkable series, a visually stunning piece that ships fully insured against any chance of mishap in transit, protected in a tamper-proof plastic capsule. The limited supplies come from an exclusive original release, and it’s a good idea to order early.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse field features Mexico’s national shield with the inscription “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS,” surrounded by a set of ten historical coats of arms.
Reverse
The reverse field features a rendition of the Winged Victory statue that stands at the apex of the Monument to Independence in Mexico City, while the volcanoes Popocatpetl and Iztacchuatl form the background. These images are accompanied by the Mexican Mint’s mark and inscriptions verifying the coin’s weight, year of issue, and silver purity.
History
The design of the famous Libertad coin brings together a veritable feast of iconic Mexican imagery. Winged Victory on the reverse is a famous sculpture created by Enrique Alciati for the raising of a monument to the centennial of Mexico’s War of Independence in 1910, to this day one of Mexico City’s most iconic landmarks. The volcanoes in the background are an equally well-known feature of the Mexican landscape, named for a pair of tragic lovers from Aztec mythology. The set of current and historic national seals on the obverse, meanwhile, features an eagle with a rattlesnake in its talons: the definitive image of the Aztecs’ myth of the founding of Tenochtitlan, the metropolis that became modern Mexico City.
