History
The original World Cup prize was known as the Jules Rimet Trophy. In 1966, it was stolen, but luckily recovered before that years tournament. In 1970, Brazils third championship gave them sole possession of the trophy, an allowance based on a decree set by Rimet in 1930. As such, a new design was commissioned for 1974. After an extensive submission process, the job was ultimately given to Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga, who created the iconic design that is still used today
