Reverse
Gollum is a complicated villain with different sides to his personality, one of which is snarling and monstrous as seen in his image on the reverse side of this coin, rendered in high relief against a mirrored surface. Small supplementary inscriptions show the copyright and trademark of New Line Productions and verify the coin’s gold content.
Obverse
On the obverse is a legal tender effigy of Queen Elizabeth II: the classic Ian Rank-Broadley design that has appeared on coinage in the British Commonwealth for decades. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “Elizabeth II,” “Niue,” “25 Dollars” and “2022.”
History
InThe Lord of the Rings,Gollum was a study in contrasts: by turns pitiable and dangerous, cruel and tormented, with hints of yearning for his old self before he happened by chance across a magic ring. That ring turned out to be the One Right of Power, a cursed artifact that prolonged his life and drove him mad with obsession: his “Precious,” which he pursued throughout both the books and the films until he came to an unexpected end. The artwork on this coin perfectly captures the twisted and suffering nature of Gollum, a character who proved surprisingly appealing to fans.
