{{/presale}}Though known proverbially as one of the most “funny-looking” animals in the world, the platypus is also a mysterious and profoundly intriguing species with plenty to teach us about the range of possible animals and what they can do. Their seemingly erratic combination of avian, mammalian and reptilian traits includes abilities that almost verge on animal “superpowers,” and despite having been dismissed as a hoax by the first English naturalists who laid eyes on them, They’re a source of endless fascination for biologists today. The 2022 Proof Niue Australia Platypus 1 oz Silver Coin is now available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
2022 Proof Niue Australia Platypus Silver Coin features lavish colorized artwork and the brilliant mirrored backgrounds of a proof-quality silver collectible. It comes in an attractive presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity, and each shipment is fully insured by the team at Provident Metals.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse side features an official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, confirming it as legal tender of Niue. This is joined by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE 2022,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “1 OZ 999 SILVER.”
Reverse
The coin’s reverse side shows a platypus diving into a gorgeously colorized and detailed blue and green underwater environment, with a companion waiting on the shore behind. This is joined by the inscription “AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS.”
History
Over the years since its discovery in the West, the platypus has been seen as everything from bizarre creation akin to a misbegotten science experiment to an adorable symbol of Australia’s wilderness, worth preserving. Young people around the world have met the platypus in the form of the cartoon Perry the Platypus on the animated showPhineas and Ferb, but the real-life animal is more inscrutable and possessed of many unusual traits that seem to come from reptilian, mammalian, and avian sources alike. Bioluminescent under UV light for reasons nobody yet understands, they have males with venomous spurs, duck-like bills that can sense electricity and pheromones, and store almost half their body fat in beaver-like tails.
