History
William Wyons career as an engraver began in 1816 when he joined the Royal Mint as an apprentice. Wyon displayed great ambition from the outset. Within a year, he self-funded his own project and created the Three Graces design. Though it never entered circulation, it signaled the arrival of a major new talent at the mint. In 1828, Wyon became Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint and for the next twenty years, he produced some of the most acclaimed designs in history. These include the Young Head portrait, Una and the Lion, and the Gothic Crown. Wyon stayed on as Chief Engraver until his death in 1851.
