Obverse
On the obverse of 2022 Niue Czech Lion Coins is the popular effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998, this portrait shows Her Majesty in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The obverse is also embellished with a shield and heraldic eagle design in honor of the Czech coat of arms. Youll find inscriptions on the obverse reading NIUE ISLAND, 2022, ELIZABETH II, 50 DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse field of the 2022 Czech Lion Gold Coin depicts a powerful lion. The lion is shown in close-up, the details of its face delivered in splendid detail. On its head rests the Crown of Saint Wenceslas, which was used for Bohemian coronations from 1346 to 1836. Inscriptions on the reverse read CESKA REPUBLIKA 1 OZ AU 999.9.
History
When the Czech Lion series began in 2017, the lion was shown from a wide angle as it guarded the Czech coat of arms and Crown of Saint Wenceslas. A variation on this theme continued up until 2021, when the design shifted to a close-up of the lions face. And instead of guarding the crown, the lion was wearing it, instead. This is in keeping with the Czech coat of arms, which depicts a double-tailed lion wearing a crown. Regardless of how it is portrayed, the lion has played a major symbolic role in the history of the Czech Republic. Not only does it represent power and sovereignty, but it inspires strength and courage in the people of this country when they need it the most.
