History
Depictions of the Czech Lion always include this majestic animal wearing a crown. This is in keeping with the lions symbolic representation of power and sovereignty. The crown the lion wears is the Crown of Saint Wenceslas, originally made for Charles IV in 1346. Wenceslas was the Duke of Bohemia in the 10th century and today is recognized as the patron saint of the Czech Republic. Wenceslas, who died a martyr, helped bring about the medieval notion of the Rex Justus, or Righteous King. He is also the subject of the popular carol “Good King Wenceslas.
