History

The attempt to create a follow-up television series to the originalStar Trekinvolved the creation of characters to walk in the footsteps of some of the most iconic television characters of all time. There were doubters as to whether this could be done, but one of the characters that laid those doubts to rest was Lt. Commander Data, a unique android who despite his superhuman abilities was known for his fascination with the human condition and for becoming more human himself. Played by Brent Spiner, this character was one of the keys to the popularity of Star Trek: The Next Generationand is the third member of his crew to be celebrated by the New Zealand Mint.
