{{/presale}}For years, the New Zealand Mint has issued gorgeous collectible coins to pay tribute to some of the Disney universe’s most iconic characters. One of the most unusual of those famous figures is Scrooge McDuck, who began as an antagonist of Donald Duck in 1947. In the decades since, he grew into a more complicated character who was able to represent both a cautionary message about greed and also the more positive traits of business and entrepreneurship. An avid lover of money in general and gold coins in particular in all his incarnations, he finally appears on a gold coin of his own with the 2022 Niue 75th Anniversary Scrooge McDuck 1/4 oz Gold Coin, now on offer from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 2022 Niue 75th Anniversary Scrooge McDuck Gold Coin features a mirror-finish background and a playful engraved portrait of its subject. Each coin ships in a branded display case inside a protective acrylic capsule, along with a Certificate of Authenticity that specifies its unique number in this extremely exclusive limited mintage.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse side features the famous Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II, confirming its status as legal tender. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “25 DOLLARS,” and “2022.”
Reverse
The coin’s reverse side shows Scrooge McDuck holding a wad of cash, offset against a mirror-finish background. Fine inscriptions at the coin’s rim specify its gold contents and confirm the Disney copyright.
History
The miserly uncle of one of Disney’s original animated superstars, Scrooge McDuck made his original debut as an antagonist in a Donald Duck cartoon in 1947. It was little suspected at the time that he would become a mainstay of the Disney roster, amazingly popular with audiences to whom he offered more than just comical greed and all-around laughs. He helmed his own comics and shows over the years, including the popularDucktales, and gained a dedicated fan following. With this precious collectible, he joins the ranks of numerous iconic figures commemorated by the New Zealand Mint’s Disney coins including Jiminy Cricket, Ariel the Little Mermaid, Bambi, and many more.
