Obverse
On the obverse of 2022 Cook Islands Tortoise Gold Coins, youll find a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Here, Her Late Majesty faces right with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara resting atop her head. This iconic portrait debuted in 1998 and is credited to acclaimed British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Inscriptions are included across the edge that read ELIZABETH II, COOK ISLANDS, 5 DOLLARS, 2022.
Reverse
The reverse side of 2022 Tortoise 1/2 Gram Gold Coins features a sea turtle in the ocean. This image is derived from the classical Greek coins produced on the island of Aegina 2500 years ago. We see the tortoise from an aerial vantage point as it moves through the water.
History
The sea turtle specimens produced in ancient Aegina are thought by many to be the first silver coins ever minted. The people of Aegina were inspired to produce a solid silver coin after merchants reported a coinage in Lydia and Iona made of silver and gold called electrum. Many also believe that the turtle was chosen for the design because of its sea powers, which reinforced Aeginas status as a trading superpower. However, another possible answer is that ingots prior to these coins were nicknamed turtles due to their convex shape. As such, the new coins followed suit.
