Obverse
The legendary cisalpine peak of the Matterhorn is seen snow-covered in virtually photo-realistic detail on the obverse side of this coin, standing out with a level of intricacy worthy of fine sculpture and unusual on most coins. This side is also inscribed “MATTER-/HORN” and carries an ice ax with the inscription “4,478 meters,” the height of its summit.
Reverse
Designed originally by Ian Rank-Broadley, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the coin’s reverse side is similar to that seen on many circulation coins in Commonwealth countries. It carries the inscriptions “Queen Elizabeth II,” “10 Dollars,” “Cook Islands,” and “2022.”
History
The Matterhorn has been an icon of alpine adventure since the first recorded ascent in modern times was made in 1865. That ascent, which succeeded but at the tragic price of three lives, took a path up the north and east faces that converge at the point called the Hrnligrat: the same angle seen on this coin. The event set the stage for multiple attempts at climbing its sheer and dangerous slopes in the decades since.
