History
Polar bears have a strong connection to the brown bear and likely evolved from their population during the most recent ice age roughly 150,000 years ago. Because they were isolated, these marine mammals developed a unique, transparent fur over their black skin that serves them well in the frigid climate. Their fur both reflects and refracts sunlight and gives polar bears their iconic white appearance. It also enables them to stay warm in sub-zero temperatures.
