Highlights:
The Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Series features designs on the reverse from artist and coin engraver John Mercanti. His long, storied career at the United States Mint culminated in his elevation to the position of Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in 2006. He served as the mints 12th Chief Engraver from 2006 to 2010 when he retired. His designs included repeat images on the 2014 and 2015 coins, as well as a fresh design in 2016 that repeated in 2017. Since 2018, the reverse field has had a distinct, new design each year.
Obverse
On the obverse side of 2022 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. The Queens portrait featured here was originally created for the Royal Mint in 2015 by Jody Clark and first featured on Australian coins in 2018. The inscriptions on this side read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
Reverse
The reverse field of the 2022 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin features an image of the wedge tail eagle. This close-up visual of the head of the predator shows off the size and power of its massive beak. The design is one of the first in the series to focus so closely on an individual feature of the bird. The inscriptions include AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE, the P mint mark of Perth Mint, and 2022 1 OZ 9999 SILVER.
History
Australian Wedge Tail Eagles have sold out their limited mintages in all previous years. The coins were initially available from 2014 to 2017 with .999 pure silver content, and elevated to .9999 pure silver content in 2018.
