{{/presale}}Aphrodite, best known as the ancient Greek goddess of love, is the subject of the latest issue in the Gods of Olympus series from the Perth Mint. An extraordinary five-ounce bullion collectible in an extremely limited mintage, this coin pays tribute to the single most iconic artistic theme surrounding Aphrodite: the image of the goddess being born, fully grown, out of the foam of the sea. This coin shows her surrounded by sea creatures as if they are drawn to pay homage to her, in artwork with striking high-relief detail. The Perth Mint’s 2022 Antique Tuvalu Gods of Olympus Aphrodite 5 oz Silver Coin is now available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 2022 Tuvalu Gods of Olympus Aphrodite Silver Silver Coin sports an antique finish that accentuates its detailed engravings, and ships in a themed box secured in a plastic capsule. It’s tracked and fully insured against any chance of loss or damage by Provident Metals.
Obverse
The obverse side features Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II, confirming it as legal tender of Tuvalu. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “5 oz 9999 Ag,” “2022,” “TUVALU,” “5 DOLLARS,” and “QUEEN ELIZABETH II.”
Reverse
The reverse features Aphrodite emerging from the sea in flowing robes with a dove perched on one hand, surrounded by gulls and fish, mollusks and dolphins. The swan in the foreground is decorated by the inscription “APHRODITE.”
History
The sixth issue in the Gods of Olympus series from the Perth Mint features Aphrodite, one of the most influential and best-known of the ancient Greek deities. Aphrodite was (and is) a powerful and complicated figure, who represented both the gentle and the violent sides of passion. In her gentle aspect, she was a patroness of love and pleasure, beauty and procreation, and the patroness of all manner of luxuries that brought joy into the lives of mortals. But she was ultimately the child of a violent struggle between Titans — the sea was foaming in the wake of that conflict as she emerged from it — and she could also represent the violent aspects of passion and lust. Spartans called her “Aphrodite the Warlike,” and epithets elsewhere like “Gravedigger” and “Killer of Men” warned the unwary against excess.
