Obverse
On the obverse field of 2022 Antique Niue David Coins is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara atop her head. Below are the initials IRB, which stand for the designer Ian Rank-Broadley. Youll find additional inscriptions that read ELIZABETH II, NIUE, FIVE DOLLARS, AG .999, 2022.
Reverse
The reverse of 2022 Antique Niue David Silver Coins shows a close-up replication of Davids face. Contrary to previous depictions that showed David as a gentle youth, this David has a more mature, commanding presence as he looks off in the right direction. The background consists of a rough texture, which reminds us that the original David was carved from a block of marble. Inscribed on the edge is the word DAVID.
History
After the initial artists assigned to carve the David failed, Michelangelo gave it a shot in 1501. Three years later, the statue was completed. While the statue is meant to honor David from the famous biblical narrative, it also gained its own local symbolic significance. At the time, Florence was an independent state, yet it was threatened by rival states as well as the powerful Medici family. David stood resolutely with his head facing towards Rome where the Medicis lived, which many interpreted as a warning to not interfere with the liberties of Florence.
