{{/presale}}The wealthy and powerful seaport of Corinth was one of the most prominent city-states of ancient Greece. A large part of its influence came from trade, a fact reflected by its sophisticated system of coinage and by the fact that its coins — especially the “Pegasus sater” coin — were in use by traders across the Mediterranean. Originating in the 7th century BC, the ancient Corinthian coins featuring the famous mythic winged horse are one of the most storied legacies in numismatics. The Cook Islands pay tribute to that legacy with the 2022 1 oz Silver Antique Cook Islands Pegasus Coin.
Highlights:
The 2022 Antique Cook Islands Pegasus Silver Coin combines the inspiration of an ancient coin with the power of modern SmartMinting technology, offering ultra high-relief medallic artwork and a lustrous antique finish that will delight discerning collectors. It ships in a windowed display case that makes it easy to display as part of your collection on arrival, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Obverse
An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the coin’s obverse side, verifying it as legal tender of the Cook Islands. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “Elizabeth II,” “5 Dollars,” “Cook Islands,” and “2022.”
Reverse
Pegasos in mid-flight appears on the coin’s reverse side, shown left-facing and in profile much as he would have been on an ancient “Pegasus sater” coin. He’s rendered with ultra high-relief detail and accompanied by the inscription “CI.”
History
Arguably, there’s no Greek mythological animal better known than the winged horse known to us as Pegasus, or “Pegasos” in the Greek spelling. He served as a steed for the hero Bellerophon during his battle with the monstrous Chimera, and his many myths of origin almost always led back to the sea in general or to Poseidon in particular. His connection with the sea and travel to distant lands made him a naturally inspiring icon for seagoing traders. The Corinthian money featuring the winged horse became a dominant medium of exchange as very away from home as Sicily.
