Highlights
Obverse
Adolph A. Weinman’s image of Walking Liberty is included on the obverse of the 2021-W Burnished American Eagle Silver Coin. The image dates back to 1916, when Weinman created it, and it’s been used on several coin types through the years. For this minting, the image was cleaned up a bit to ensure the outcome on the coin more closely resembled the original illustrationdown to adding the initials AW as a signature, which were seen on the original. The image itself shows Liberty walking across a field with the sunrise in the background. She’s carrying symbolic oak and laurel branches and wearing the American flag on her shoulders. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and 2021.
Reverse
The reverse design is from Emily Damstra, making this a Type 2 American Eagle dollar coin. Damstra created the image in 2020, and it includes a bald eagle flying. Like Lady Liberty on the other side, the eagle is carrying symbolic branchesthis time, only oak. Oak represents strength. Inscriptions on the reverse include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, 1 OZ FINE SILVER and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
Packaging
The coins in this listing have received an MS70 rating from the NGC, which means they’re considered flawless specimens. The 2021-W Burnished American Eagle Silver Coin ships in a protective slab with all the labels and certifications.
History
In 1776, the Continental Congress had an assignment for John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. The budding new nation needed a seal. The three men never came up with a concept that pleased the Congress, and the work on the seal carried on through multiple committees until 1782. At that time, the secretary of Congress took parts from some of the suggested designs, including the eagle, to create an official seal. The eagle had been introduced by William Barton, who was part of the third committee to work on the project. While the choice wasn’t without controversy among the founding fathers (Ben Franklin notoriously didn’t like it), the bird thus became the symbol of the nation.
