{{/presale}}Introduced in 1967, the South African Krugerrand rose to become the dominant gold bullion coin of the market by the 1980s. The bull market for gold in the 1970s resulted in production of the Krugerrands rising from just 200,000 coins in 1970 to more than 6 million coins in 1978. From 1974 to 1985, 22 million coins were sold in the United States alone. Today, the Krugerrand remains an immensely popular gold bullion option for investors.
Highlights:
When you purchase a 2021 South African Krugerrand 1/4 oz Gold Coin from Provident Metals, you receive a specimen that is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. These coins are packaged individually inside of protective plastic flips. Multiples of 50 gold coins are packaged in the original mint packaging of tubes.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2021 South African Krugerrand 1/4 oz Gold Coins is a bust of former president, Paul Kruger. This bust of Kruger was created in the 1890s for use on South African Pound Gold coins and was used through the 1920s. Designed by Otto Schultz, this bust of Kruger was most recently modernized in 1984. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read Suid-Afrika and South Africa, the former being the Afrikaans spelling of the nation of issue.
Reverse
The reverse side of 2021 South African Krugerrand Gold Coins includes the Springbok antelope. The antelope is native to the African continent and is largely found in the southern ranges of the continent, including the modern Republic of South Africa. The national emblem of South Africa, the Springbok featured on gold coins of the South African Pound from 1910 to 1960 and has been on the reverse of Krugerrand coins since 1967. The inscriptions included on this side are 1/4 Krugerrand, 2021, and Fyngoud 1/4 oz Fine Gold.
History
The Rand Refinery and South African Mint issued only a 1 oz gold coin in this series from 1967 to 1980. In 1980, responding to the surging popularity of the coin following an extended bull market for gold in the 1970s, the mint introduced 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. In 2017, 1/20 oz and 1/50 oz gold coins were introduced as well.
