Obverse
On the obverse side of 2021 Somalia Elephant 1 Kilo Silver Coins is a depiction of the coat of arms for the nation of Somalia. The design element features the national shield with a field of horizontal lines and a star at the center overlaying those lines. The crowned shield is supported on the sides by leopards with crossed spears and fern leaves beneath. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read Somalia Republic, 20 and 21 on the sides of the shield, and 2,000 Shillings.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 2021 Somalia Elephant 1 Kilo Silver Coin is an image of the African bush elephant. One of three living species of elephant, and one of two living on the African continent, the bush elephant is shown here marching toward the viewer in the design element. Its massive frame fills much of the design element with its ears flapped out and its long trunk falling down into the design rim. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include Elephant, African Wildlife, and 1 Kilo Ag 999.9.
History
The African bush elephant is the largest living land mammal in the world today. The other elephants, the African forest elephant and Asian elephant, are the other largest living land mammals today by weight. All remaining species of elephants in the world today are descended from the Wooly Mammoths of the prehistoric world, though modern elephants diverged genetically from their harrier ancestors some 2 million years ago.
