History
The process of formal independence in Sierra Leone began in 1956 when the Duke of Kent handed over the royal instruments to Sir Maurice Dorman, then-Governor of Sierra Leone. He was sworn in as Governor-General and Sir Milton Margai became the first Prime Minister of Sierra Leone. In 1961, the nation was granted independence as the Dominion of Sierra Leone with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. In 1971, that relationship ended as the country became the fully independent Republic of Sierra Leone.
