History
The Potawatomi people historically lived in the upper Great Plains along the western portion of the Great Lakes chain. The Potawatomi were once lived across Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and down into Kansas along the upper half of the Mississippi River. The Potawatomi were first encountered by French explorers who recorded encountering the first members of the tribe in what is today southwestern Michigan. During the period of Indian Removal in the mid-19th century, most of the Potawatomi were relocated to modern-day Oklahoma, with others settling in Nebraska and Kansas. Those few who remained behind in what is now Wisconsin have since been federally recognized by the US government.
