History
The Pennacook people lived in a loose collective of 18 sub-tribes known as a confederacy. At the height of its power, the Pennacook controlled much of the Merrimack River valley across New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and parts of Maine. From a total estimated population of 12,000 at its height, warfare with other tribes and disease from contact with Europeans all but wiped about the Pennacook. Today, there is no longer a distinguishable Pennacook tribe. Most of the descendants of the tribe live among the Abenaki people in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, and Canada.
