History
When Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne of England in 1952, she became the Queen of England, head of the Commonwealth, and the Queen Regnant of seven independent countries that included the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon. Though the latter three have gained independence as republics, the Queen remains Queen Regnant for the other four nations and is still head of the Commonwealth, a free association of 54 sovereign states.
