Obverse
On the obverse of 2022 Hua Mulan Heroines 2 oz Silver Coins is Queen Elizabeth II. This design by Ian Rank-Broadley dates to 1998 and has since been used on countless coins in the Commonwealth. The portrait is surrounded by Mulan imagery, including a sword, sheath, locks of hair, and a magnolia flower. Youll also find inscriptions reading ELIZABETH II, AG .999, FIVE DOLLARS, NIUE 2021.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2022 Niue Hua Mulan Heroines Coin features Mulan. Our heroine is shown extending one hand towards us and wielding a sword in the other. To her right side, we see a flying dragon while colorized magnolia flowers are shown all across the design. Inscriptions include the words HUA MULAN and their equivalent in Chinese characters.
History
Mulan first appeared in a 300-word ballad during the Northern Dynasties in China. In the tale, Mulan protects her father by dressing up as a man and taking his place in the Chinese Army.
From there, different versions of the story vary, though they all involve Mulan achieving remarkable military accomplishments while in disguise. Some iterations relate to her true identity being revealed, while others depict her returning home with the secret intact. Either way, the core themes remain consistent in every version of Mulan. She is and always will be a truly inspiring representation of the female warrior spirit.
