Obverse
The obverse design of the 2021 Morgan Dollar Coin comes from engraver George T. Morgan. It features a left-facing image of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with cotton and wheat. These design elements represent freedom and the nations agricultural foundation. The style of Libertys portrait reflects classical influences, drawing from ancient Greek and Roman coin art that helped define the Morgan Dollars original look. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and the year of issue.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2021 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, a heraldic eagle is displayed with wings spread outward. The eagle holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing defense and peace. A partial wreath made of cotton and wheat frames the eagle, reinforcing the agricultural themes seen on the obverse. This reverse design remains faithful to the historic Morgan Dollar while fitting seamlessly into the modern release. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
The US Mint issued multiple versions of the 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar to honor the 100th anniversary of both the last Morgan Dollar and the first Peace Dollar, originally struck in 1921. These releases include mint marks from San Francisco and Denver, as well as special privy marks recognizing the former Carson City (CC) and New Orleans (O) mints, which played key roles in Morgan Dollar production during the late 19th century.
