Obverse
Mexicos national coat of arms is found on the obverse field of 2021 Mexican Libertad Gold Coins. The Mexican coat of arms features a golden eagle attempting to devour a snake from its perch on a prickly pear cactus. There is a wreath made of oak and laurel below the design element and an inscription above the element of Estados Unidos Mexicanos.
Reverse
Winged Victory is depicted on the reverse side of 2021 Mexican Libertad 1/4 oz Gold Coins. The image of Winged Victory dates back to the Mexican revolution against Spain, but first appeared on Mexican coinage in 1921 when the mint released the Centenario, a 50 Peso gold coin. Winged Victory is depicted with her wings raised behind her back, her right hand holding up a wreath crown, and her left hand clutching a set of broken chains. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read 1/4 Onza, Oro Puro, 2021 Ley .999, and the Mexican Mints MO mint mark.
History
The Mexican coat of arms featured on the obverse of all coins in this series is based on a symbol from the Codex Mendoza. The Aztec codex is a visual representation of the history of the Aztec people and their rulers. Included in the codex was a representation of a golden eagle above a small cactus as it battled a snake. The image represented a message from the sun god to the Aztec people that they would found the city of Tenochtitlan on the site where a golden eagle was found devouring a rattlesnake.
