Obverse

On the obverse of the 2021 Mexican Libertad Silver Coin is the national seal of Mexico. The modern coat of arms has featured on the obverse of this series since its 1982 debut. The national seal for Mexico is based on a 1541 symbol representative of the founding of Tenochtitlan known as the Codex Mendoza. That original seal shows a golden eagle devouring a rattlesnake on the site that would later be the founding location of Tenochtitlan, the city that was the heart of the Aztec Empire and is now part of modern-day Mexico City. The only inscription on this side is Estados Unidos Mexicanos.

Reverse

The reverse field of 2021 Mexican Libertad 1/2 oz Silver Coins includes Winged Victorys statue. The image of Winged Victory seen here was based on her copper statue that stands atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column. The statue was built in 1910 to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of Mexicos independence war, while the Victory Column was erected in 1921 to mark the 100th anniversary of the wars completion. Inscriptions here read 1/2 Onza, Plata Pura, 2021 Ley .999, and the MO mint mark of the Mexican Mint.

History

Mexican Libertad Silver Coins debuted in 1982 with only a 1 oz silver coin and would continue as such through 1990. In 1991, these 1/2 oz silver coins were introduced along with 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz silver coins. In 1996, 2 oz and 5 oz silver coins were released. In 2008, the 1 Kilo silver coin debuted.
