Obverse

For the obverse field of the 2021-D Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, the US Mint revived George T. Morgans effigy of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief captures Liberty with a coronet and wreath crown, Phrygian cap, and a ring of 13 stars around the edge of the design field. Inscriptions on this face include E Pluribus Unum and 2021.

Reverse

In the reverse design of 2021-D Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, the heraldic eagle emblem created by Morgan in 1878 features at the center. The eagle is in front-facing relief with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The eagle is framed by a wreath and surrounded by inscriptions of United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar, and the D mint mark of the Denver Mint.

History

After striking the Morgan Dollars from 1878 to 1904, the US Mint ceased producing new silver dollars. This continued throughout the 1900s and 1910s, with the move to resume coining not happening until after World War I. When silver dollars were revived in 1921, it was decided to start with the Morgan Dollar design while a new image was created.

George T. Morgan had created the original artwork and dies for coining in 1878 in his first year on the job as an Assistant Engraver at the United States Mint. With no remaining dies, Morgan had to remake the dies in 1921 for his famous design. At this point in his career, he was serving as the 7th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The 1921 release of Morgans included more than 86.7 million coins. The Philadelphia Mint and San Francisco Mint again struck the coins. With the Carson City and New Orleans Mints long closed, the Denver Mint made its first and only contribution in 1921 by striking 20.345 million coins.
