{{/presale}}Popular today in the design of jade pendants in China, the Pixiu is an ancient creature whose origins are believed to date back to the Han dynasty. The first mention of creatures that would later become known as Pixiu came sometime between 206 BCE and 220 CE during the rule of the Han dynasty. Over the past two thousand years, the Pixiu have become popular in Chinese art and architecture. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 2021 Australian Guardian Lions Double Pixiu 1 oz Gold Coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The design of the Australian Guardian Lions Double Pixiu bullion coins comes from Ing Ing Jong. Hired by the Perth Mint as a coin designer and artist in 2011, her first big splash in Perth Mint coining was the 2013 Year of the Snake design in the Lunar Series II collection. She has continued contributing to Perth Mint coining with beautiful designs featured through the Lunar Series II and more recent Lunar Series III collections. Her Double Pixiu design featured on the 2020 release of the silver bullion, gold bullion, and high-relief proof strikes in both metals.
Obverse
On the obverse field of the 2021 Australian Guardian Lion Double Pixiu 1 oz Gold Coin is Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 2015 by Jody Clark, this effigy of the Queen is the sixth-generation portrait to feature on Australian coins. In the design, the Queen is shown at the age of 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read Elizabeth II, Australia, 1 oz 9999 Au, 2021, and 100 Dollars.
Reverse
The reverse face of 2021 Australian Guardian Lion Double Pixiu Gold Coins depicts a pair of Pixiu. The mythical beasts are shown sitting on a pile of Ancient Chinese gold coins with one clutching a ball in its paw and the other a Pixiu club. There is only a P mint mark on this field for inscriptions, with a stylized border design element around the top half of the coin field.
History
Pixiu were first referenced in the Book of Han, a written history of China completed in 111 CE. Chapter 96 references creatures called tao ba, lions and rhinoceros. There is an annotation attached that notes a female and male of the species, noting that the female has two antlers like a deer, while the male has just one antler.
