Obverse
A broad border of stylized draconic artwork from around the world surrounds a legal tender effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the coin’s obverse side. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “Elizabeth II,” “2 Dollars,” “Niue 2021” and “Ag 999.”
Reverse
A detailed engraving of the Japanese sea dragon Watatsumi, brought out beautifully by an antique finish, features on the coin’s reverse. It’s joined by the inscription “Silver Dragon Watatsumi,” artwork of Hokusai-style waves and a traditional pagoda, and a gorgeous decorative inset pearl clutched in the dragon’s claws.
History
The traditionalkamielemental deities of the Shinto religion take many forms. One of them is Watatsumi, the tutelary sea dragon god that takes on many names and titles in different parts of Japan and between different myths, but is always a symbol of sagacity and guidance. Numerous Shinto shrines are devoted to Watatsumi to this day, and artwork of the sea dragon showcases the mixture of ancient Chinese influences with Japan’s own distinctive and inimitable artistic genius.
