Obverse
An American Indian tribal figure is found on the obverse side of 2021 American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coins. The design found here was created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser who combined facial features from three real-world indigenous leaders of the early 20th century: Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. The figure is in right-profile relief with a stoic gaze. Inscriptions include Liberty, 2021, and Frasers F initial.
Reverse
The American bison is shown on the reverse face of the 2021 American Buffalo Gold Coin. Also created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser, this design featured alongside the stoic indigenous figure on the obverse on the original Buffalo Nickel. The bison is shown here in left-profile relief as it stands on a small mound of dirt. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, $50, and 1 oz .9999 Fine Gold.
History
American Buffalo Gold Coins debuted in 2006 with the first issues of the coin boasting the highest mintages in both the bullion and proof versions. The bullion coins have only been offered in 1 oz gold. The proof coins had fractional ounces available in 2008, while a one-time issue of burnished versions was also released in 2008 with fractional ounces available.
