The longest-running gold coin program in world history is the South African Krugerrand. Introduced in 1967 to promote private investment in gold bullion coins, the Krugerrand dominated the market for more than two decades and remains a popular bullion coin with investors in the 21st century. Right now, you can buy the 2020 South African Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold Coin from Provident Metals.

Your purchase of 2020 South African Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold Coins comes with either protective plastic flips or mint tubes. All individual coins ship in a protective flip, while orders of 15 coins ship in mint tubes. South African Krugerrands have 22-karat gold content with a copper alloy for durability. The coins all contain 91.67% gold content by weight with 8.33% copper.

Obverse

On the obverse of 2020 South African Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold Coins is a depiction of Paul Kruger. This left-profile bust of the former President of the South African Republic was initially created in 1892 for South African Pound denominations and refined in 1967 by Otto Schultz for this series. The inscriptions on this face include Suid-Afrika and South Africa, the Afrikaans and English-language name of the country.

Reverse

The reverse face of 2020 South African Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold Coins bears the design of a Springbok antelope. The medium-sized antelope is the only member of its species and lives predominantly in the grasslands of southern and southwestern Africa. Inscriptions on this side read Krugerrand, 2020, and Fyngoud 1/2 oz Fine Gold.

History

Gold Krugerrand coins represented 90% of the gold bullion coins available in the market by 1980. This pressed the mint to introduce the fractional-ounce versions of the coin. In addition to these 1/2 oz gold coins, the mint released 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins. Each one uses the same designs featured on the 1 oz coin.

Ordering

2020 South African Krugerrand Gold Coins are produced by the Rand Refinery and the South African Mint. The former is the largest single-site refinery and smelting complex in the world, while the South African Mint is owned by the South African Reserve Bank and produces both Krugerrand and circulating Rand coins for the government.
